Readers sound off on Facebook’s freedom of speech, subway crime rates and copyediting

Westfield, Mass.: The Daily News editorial about Meta and how it is changing with the new administration ("Facebook’s about-face on speech," Jan. 13) is like watching a replay of Joe Biden’s farewell speech. It's almost like the Daily News wrote the farewell speech for Biden, or maybe Biden wrote this editorial for the Daily News. On second thought, Biden hasn’t been capable of putting two sentences back-to-back in years, or even reading them from a monitor, so I suspect it’s the former, as you are professional journalists.

Dems limit the flow of info when it suits them

Westfield, Mass.: The Daily News editorial about Meta and how it is changing with the new administration (“Facebook’s about-face on speech,” Jan. 13) is like watching a replay of Joe Biden’s farewell speech. It’s almost like the Daily News wrote the farewell speech for Biden, or maybe Biden wrote this editorial for the Daily News. On second thought, Biden hasn’t been capable of putting two sentences back-to-back in years, or even reading them from a monitor, so I suspect it’s the former, as you are professional journalists.

Mark Zuckerberg said that the Biden administration called his staff demanding which stories could be told and which could not. That administration and its peddlers of lies and censorship needed to have the efficacy of vaccines told their way, and the damning laptop showing payola from enemies withheld. The $400 million that Zuckerberg sent to Biden was not so much a donation as a tribute that also came with rules of the business road for Meta. This was to get Biden elected, then to justify his failures for four years. The so-called fact-checkers were told which marks to hit and which to aim low at or simply ignore.

The editorial chooses to ignore what Zuckerberg now says because it shines a dim light on the integrity of the free press. If it had been free and honest, this piece would not have been printed. The free press winds are blowing differently today, and The News doesn’t much like it because it is facing the falsehood headwinds of the disinformation it used daily for years when Facebook played by the expected rules. Inconsistent with law

Kew Gardens: President Trump ordered the firing of the senior prosecutors who worked with Special Counsel Jack Smith on the classified documents and the Jan. 6 insurrection cases. The reason for these firings given by our news media was that they could not be trusted to support the president’s legal agenda. Aren’t lawyers supposed to base their legal arguments on the Constitution and legal precedent rather than the personal agenda of a president? Be warned, America. Glenn Hayes

Boyish comments

Monroe, N.J.: I am really not surprised by Voicer John F. Rossano writing about the faces of Sens. Lisa Murkowski and Susan Collins as they voted against Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth’s confirmation. He wrote, “They were stone-faced.” Maybe that’s because they were serious about preventing an incompetent and poor role model from taking office. He also wrote the derogatory statement, “Get a life, girls, or retire.” Girls — really? Come out of the 1950s, if you dare, and see these women as those who are against the worshiping of “boys” in Congress and trying to provide our country with a fair and just selection process. I guess you are all following the king, boys! Katherine A. Moloney

Historic revision

Bronx: The gaslighting of America is forever etched into American history. Jan. 6 never happened. What we saw documented on television was actually a rally of concerned Americans exercising their constitutional rights. These tourists did not attack Capitol Police officers, they were defending themselves after being provoked by these same police. No one was really hurt beyond a few bruises, and any damage done to the Capitol Building was purely accidental. Our beloved president, who never lies, has rightly described these victims as patriots and hostages, and as further proof, Trump has pardoned these wrongly convicted patriots. They are blameless! Yes, America has been gaslit, and there is more to come in the next four years. Fasten your seatbelts. Gilbert M. Lane

Name games

Kearny, N.J.: With Trump’s penchant for hitting the little white ball, I’m surprised he doesn’t want to change the Gulf of Mexico to the Golf of America! Kevin Dale

Low blows

Brooklyn: Voicer Barbara Berg seems disturbed about my urging people to put late-night talk show hosts out of business because they ridicule Trump. Sarcastically, she suggests that maybe we should put out of business others who lie on TV. Berg is comparing apples to oranges. Lying is not the issue, although there’s a lot of it on the news and talk shows. The issue is a barrage of vicious invective against Trump over many years that has generated much pointless hatred. First, it shows these hosts have not a shred of decency. Then it shows that their writers do not have the talent to come up with jokes that do not offend half of America. Why does anyone watch these humorless buffoons? Josh Greenberger

Armed intruders

Brewster, N.Y.: So now we have armed ICE agents roaming the halls of our children’s and grandchildren’s schools? Our children don’t need to see that and deserve better! Larry Maslak

Views from somewhere

Scarsdale: Voicer George Kooney makes a good point. As a Fox News viewer, I realize that Fox is not always “fair and balanced.” The other network news media isn’t either, which is why I never watch the networks. Fox is biased and so are the networks. Choose your bias. However, I have a bulletin for Kooney: We don’t live in a democracy! We live in a republic. As a child, I learned that just from reciting the Pledge of Allegiance. He should try it. Peter McCarthy

Wrong-headed

Brooklyn: Six young thieves steal an MTA train and go for a ride. As I watch Gov. Hochul, Mayor Adams, District Attorney Alvin Bragg, the City Council and MTA CEO Janno Lieber continue to flush our state and city down the toilet, it reminds me of what the late, great Capt. Lou Albano used to tell his opponents inside the wrestling ring: “Your brain is the size of a dehydrated BB.” I think that pretty much sums up the intelligence of this crew of misfits. Joseph Savino

Anecdotal evidence

Spring Valley, N.Y.: They are saying on the news that crime is down in the subways. Then the next story is about two separate incidents of people being pushed onto the tracks. Then you hear about a stabbing in the station. But they want you to believe crime is down. Delores McDonald

Unmerited mercy

Astoria: The recent release of cop killer Lee Ernest Walker took me back to the fifth floor of Rikers Island Hospital in 1984, where he was recovering from bullet wounds he received before his arrest for the murder of police officer Juan Andino. I remember his sinister smile as he asked for an extra “click ” for a six-minute phone call. He was wearing Cazals, the latest eyewear, without any lenses on the frame. They were probably the same ones he stole from the South Bronx eyewear store that led to him jumping Andino from behind and grabbing his gun, with which he fired two shots into Andino’s head and face. He’s the 43rd cop killer released since 2017. The 16-member state Parole Board, 10 of which were appointed by Gov. Andrew Cuomo, could have denied Walker his release the way I denied him his extra click so Andino can rest in peace. Aris Sakellaridis

Oafish oversight

Kearny, N.J.: Only a complete moron like Eric Adams would think to propose the current commissioner of correction as the “independent” receiver to fix the city’s failing jails system (“City choice to be jails receiver slammed,” Jan. 28). That’d be like letting a criminal investigate his own crime or be his own probation officer! In true fashion for this corrupt administration, the commissioner would presumably collect two salaries for her two conflicting roles while basically investigating herself. Adams must be on the crack if he thinks any judge would be stupid enough to go for this scheme — well, outside of Aileen Cannon, who oversaw the case against Trump down in Florida, of course. John Woodmaska

Deploy spellcheck

Huntington Station, L.I.: I have been trying to turn a blind eye to some of the typos and errors that are turning up more and more in newspapers, and not just my beloved Daily News. However, the caption on a picture of the latest subway pusher story in amNewYork Metro is unfortunate and makes this retired English teacher cringe: “Andrew Pashinin is collard…” Please remind reporters/copywriters to use more care. Nancy Macri Kennedy
