Party City closing all stores, no severance for employees: Reports
The largest party supply store in the United States plans to close the doors to every store.
ST. LOUIS - The largest party supply store in the United States plans to close the doors to every store.
According to CNN, Party City’s CEO shared the news with corporate employees Friday during a video conference.
FOX 2 visited the location in Olivette Friday, which was still open in the afternoon. The store manager directed our questions to the company’s corporate office.
CNN reports corporate employees were told Party City is “winding down” operations immediately. Those workers were reportedly told Friday was their last day on the job and that they wouldn’t receive severance pay.
Some Party City employees received letters stating they would lose their jobs when the company officially closes stores on Feb. 28.
Shoppers we spoke with were surprised by the news.
“There are a lot of locations, which I was also surprised about because I don’t know why there are so many Party City’s. But I guess it’s a little devastating just for my childhood self,” Bella Shawel, shopper, said.
There are 13 Party City stores in Missouri and one in Fairview Heights, Illinois.
Officials with the Missouri Department of Labor tell us they’ve not yet received notice from Party City about the closures.
