Opinion: Historic Saratoga Village is a destination like no other

As a small-town community, Saratoga has a colorful past to be discovered by locals, tourists and all those in the South Bay. The historic Saratoga Village is a quaint but bustling shopping, restaurant and art district in Saratoga. The Village, as we have come to know it, is set apart from other small towns in part because of organizations that continue to cultivate its beauty and vitality. This month, I would like to shine a spotlight on three groups whose work has been invaluable to our city: the Village Gardeners, Saratoga Village Development Council and Saratoga Historical Foundation.

Our beautiful Saratoga Village owes much of its charm to the Saratoga Village Gardeners, a volunteer group of gardeners who came together more than 20 years ago. They bring their collective green thumb to meticulously maintain flowerbeds and greenery from one end of the Village to the other. They meet every Tuesday morning, rain or shine. The city and Village merchants cannot thank them enough.

The Saratoga Village Development Council is a community-based organization that plays a vital role in supporting the businesses that give the Village its distinct character. Through collaboration with the business community, the development council focuses on creating a unique district, welcoming new business for the residents and visitors to enjoy and helping established Village businesses grow. It has contributed funds for special Village projects, including installing bronze plaques on the numerous historic buildings along Big Basin Way.

Saratoga has a rich and colorful history. Established in 1848 as a sawmill town, it grew exponentially when a local spring was discovered in the 1860s. The Saratoga Springs resort was soon built to take advantage of the area’s mineral waters. The resort became a popular destination for travelers seeking rest and rejuvenation, drawing visitors from nearby San Francisco and other parts of California.

The Saratoga Historical Foundation has been instrumental in preserving Saratoga’s history. The Saratoga History Museum showcases artifacts, photographs and exhibits that tell the story of Saratoga’s rich history. The museum includes displays of the area’s Native American heritage, the influence of the Heritage Orchard and vineyard, early businesses and notable local figures. In addition to the main museum, visitors can explore the 1860s-era McWilliams House—an authentic pioneer home—and a replica of a working blacksmith shop. This museum is a core foundation of the Village, one which we are so proud of.

Thanks to the passionate efforts of the Saratoga Historical Foundation, the Saratoga Village Development Council and the Village Gardeners, our city flourishes with beauty, character and community spirit. Their dedication brings Saratoga’s rich history and vibrant landscape to life, creating a place where everyone can feel connected and inspired. Join us in celebrating all that makes our Village a treasured destination.

Yan Zhao is the mayor of Saratoga.
