(KRON) -- Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao was elected with a 50.3% vote through rank-choice voting in 2022. The mayor believes her policies have led to Oakland’s most recent drop in crime. She also credits herself for creating a home for the city’s newest baseball team, the Oakland Ballers.
Critics say Thao contributed to the public safety crisis in Oakland, partly through budget mismanagement, and the departure of the city’s Major League Baseball team, the Oakland Athletics. The campaign to recall Thao received enough signatures to make the ballot back in May – before the FBI raided the mayor’s home in June.
