(KRON) -- The City of Oakland cleared a large encampment on East 12th Street after a homicide occurred in the area last week. The city said it found numerous instances of criminal activity happening at the encampment.
The homicide happened on Jan. 14 on the 2200 block of East 12th St just before 9 a.m. The victim was shot and died at a hospital.
After the killing, the city "initiated an emergency encampment closure due to an imminent threat to public safety."
The city called living conditions at the encampment "hazardous," as fires, criminal activity and stolen cars were reported there.
The encampment is one of several along East 12th Street. KRON4 reported in May that due to copper thefts, stop signs replaced traffic lights at 12th Street and 16th Avenue, which is several blocks away from where the homicide happened.
Business owners reported armed robberies, sideshows and sex work in the area as well.
