NYSUT urges governor to create statewide cell phone restrictions

ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) -The New York State United Teachers (NYSUT) asked Governor Hochul to create statewide restrictions on cell phones during the school day. The labor union shared stories of cyberbullying and classroom distractions, but also successful policies and positive classroom environments.

NYSUT President Melinda Person said most policies aren't strong enough. "We are here united in a common goal: Creating healthier, safer and more focused learning environments for our children through distraction-free schools."

And teachers reflected on the issues. "Fighting with students for 20 minutes about a phone. It just really wasn't the best use of everyone's time," described Natalie McKay, Schoharie CSD teacher.

Districts like Schoharie have since moved to a 'bell-to-bell' policy. It requires students who bring a phone to school to put it in a Yondr pouch for the entire school day.

"In fact, we noticed that on day one of implementation with Yondr three years ago, our students began to engage socially, academically in the classrooms," explained Superintendent Dave Blanchard. "You saw a transformation."

Hochul met with the NYSUT community last September to discuss technology in schools. The labor union's president says the governor is ready to act.

"She sees this constant cellphone and social media use crippling the physical and mental health of the next generation of New Yorkers." said Person. "This fall at our convening she said, 'No more. Our students deserve better.'"
