Nvidia moves shop to China to focus on AI-driven cars

Nvidia has taken a step forward, opening a shop in China and hiring hundreds of individuals in Beijing to expand a team of researchers working on new autonomous driving technology.

Nvidia has been developing AI software and driving automation for more than a decade; however, its endeavors have not yet yielded results.

The company’s researchers in China would be well-positioned to collaborate with local manufacturers who are seeking to improve their offerings by incorporating these technologies.

Nvidia moves some operations to China

The company is reportedly alleged to have opened a new office in the Zhongguancun tech, an innovation center in Beijing that is the focal point of China’s aspiration to become a technological powerhouse. It is home to nearly 9,000 high-tech companies.

As part of expanding the company, Nvidia increased the size of its team of researchers in Beijing by approximately 200 people, particularly those who specialize in self-driving technology.

The decision was made in response to China’s growing interest in autonomous driving. Baidu Inc. and other established firms have already begun providing robotaxi services in specific cities through their Apollo Go venture.

Nvidia, currently based in Santa Clara, California, will increase its workforce from approximately 3,000 at the beginning of 2024 to about 4,000 by the end of the year. The AI chips leader also expanded its after-sales service and networking software development teams

The US collaboration with China’s workforce

Beijing has achieved a dominant position in the development of EV technologies and, through its support for domestic electric vehicle manufacturers, has contributed to the reduction of prices for a new generation of connected cars. 

Nvidia has endeavored to preserve positive relationships with Beijing. Still, this week, the local antitrust regulator announced an investigation into Nvidia’s 2020 acquisition of Mellanox, which the authorities had previously conditionally approved.

The investigation commenced only weeks after Chief Executive Officer Jensen Huang emphasized China’s technological contributions during a visit to Hong Kong. It is believed to be an element of the expanding US-China trade dispute and may result in a fine or requests for remedial measures.

President-elect Donald Trump has threatened to impose additional tariffs on Chinese commodities, while Beijing has implemented an export ban on critical materials.

Even though China is subject to US trade restrictions that prevent Nvidia from selling its most advanced semiconductors there, the company generated $5.4 billion in sales during the September quarter. The US chip designer continues to consider the country a significant market and research center.
