Northern Colorado I-25 express lane to close through 2027
An Interstate 25 express lane will soon close for the next two years.
DENVER (KDVR) — An Interstate 25 express lane will soon close for the next two years.
On Friday, the Colorado Department of Transportation said the southbound I-25 express lane between CO Highway 60 and CO Highway 56, Johnstown to Berthoud, will close starting on Nov. 22 and lasting through 2027.
The reason for this extensive closure is so crews can work on various phases of the I-25 North Express Lane, Mead to Berthoud project.
Within this project, CDOT said crews will pave both directions of I-25 with concrete, reconstruct the I-25 interchange at Weld County Road 34 and add a 12-foot express lane in each direction from CO 66 to CO 56.
What will happen when the express lane closes?
On Friday, Nov. 22, the southbound I-25 on-ramp at CO 56 (Berthoud) will close from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. for a traffic switch.
During the overnight closure, crews will stripe lanes, move barriers and switch traffic onto new lanes.
During this time, CDOT said drivers should plan for a 10-15 minute delay and follow this detour: "Traffic on CO 56 intending to travel south will turn north to Colorado Highway 60/Weld County Road 48 (exit 252), turn around and enter southbound I-25."
Then, through 2025, southbound I-25 traffic will be shifted to the northbound lanes into a head-to-head configuration between CO 56 and CO 66.
On Sunday, Nov. 24, another overnight closure will take place on the southbound I-25 on and off-ramps at WCR 34 near Mead. From 9 p.m. to 5 a.m., crews will stripe lanes, move barriers and switch traffic.
According to CDOT, drivers should take the following detours:
- Traffic exiting I-25 at Mead will continue south to CO 66, turn around and travel north to exit 245.
- Traffic on WCR 34 intending to travel south will turn north to CO 56/Weld County Road 44 (exit 250), turn around and enter southbound I-25.
