A New Jersey man died after he was fatally struck by a vehicle driven by a law enforcement officer while he walked near the local police station.
Officials on Tuesday confirmed that the victim, a 51-year-old man from Newark, died from the injuries he sustained in the crash, NJ.com reported. His name has not been released.
The deadly incident unfolded just before 7 p.m. Monday evening as an officer was pulling out of the Paterson Police Police Department parking lot near Memorial Drive, according to a joint statement from Passaic County Prosecutor Camelia M. Valdes and Paterson Police Department Officer-In-Charge Isa Abbassi.
“The officer remained on scene and attempted to render aid to the victim,” who was rushed to St. Joseph’s University Medical Center in Paterson with arm and head injuries, Valdes and Abbassi said. He was pronounced dead a short time later.
Authorities have so far offered few other details in the case. It’s not clear whether the officer involved, who has not been identified, was on duty at the time. Police also declined to say whether the officer was driving a department cruiser or a private vehicle during the crash.
An investigation into the matter is ongoing, and anyone who may have information in the case have been asked to contact either the Passaic County Prosecutor or the Paterson Police Department.
