NIAGARA COUNTY, N.Y. (WIVB) – A Niagara Wheatfield High School football player remains in the hospital after taking a hard hit during Friday night’s game at Williamsville North High School.

Logan Senik’s parents said that tackle caused severe lacerations to his kidneys, among other injuries. He was rushed to the hospital after the hit, but he's now out of the ICU, surgery and is recovering.

It happened in the second quarter with just under 10 minutes on the clock. Logan, a high school junior and number 24 on the field, was on the 25-yard line when he was tackled, falling to the ground.

Trainers checked him out and Logan got back on his feet about three minutes after the tackle. The 17-year-old’s mother was in the stands and drove him from the game to Millard Fillmore Suburban Hospital where he was then rushed by ambulance to ECMC.

His father, William Senik, was not at the game, but said doctors at the hospital were concerned about internal bleeding and the potential for Logan to lose a kidney.

While his son is still in a lot of pain, he's grateful for the community support of nearly $5,000 and donated meals.

“He’s grateful for everyone reaching out to him because he has seen it, we showed him, and he has his phone, so when he’s awake and alert, he’s checking it and thanking everybody,” William said. “We thank everyone who’s contributed in every way, very much.”

William said every Niagara Wheatfield player will have his son's number on their helmets at the next home game.

Meanwhile, both of Logan's parents question why an ambulance wasn't on standby during Friday’s game.

According to the New York State Public High School Athletic Association, there’s no requirement for one to be there.

A spokesperson for the Williamsville Central School District told WIVB News 4 that if any ambulance is needed, one is called, adding that in this case, there was no request for one or additional sideline treatment.
