New Year's Eve weather: Freeze warning and frost advisory ring in chilly end to 2024

SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) -- It will be a chilly end to the year with New Year's Eve starting out with freeze warnings and frost advisories for much of the Bay Area. The warnings and advisories kick in at 8 p.m. Monday and will last through 10 a.m. Tuesday morning, the National Weather Service said.

Areas under a freeze warning include:

• Interior North Bay
• Eastern Santa Clara Mountains
• Interior Central Coast

Areas under a frost advisory include:

• The rest of the Bay Area (except San Francisco)
• San Mateo Peninsula
• Central Coast

Temperatures on New Year's Eve will be the lowest they have been all year for many parts of the Bay Area. Lows across the inland valleys could drop to 28 to 34 degrees, according to the NWS.

"The last day of 2024 will bring the coldest temperatures of the year for much of the Bay Area and Central Coast," the weather service said. "As such, it's not quite clear exactly how cold it will get Tuesday, but the bike commuters out there will want to wear gloves for sure."

New Year's Eve will warm up somewhat, according to KRON4 Meteorologist Kyla Grogan. However, by 5 p.m. Tuesday, cloud cover is expected to roll in over much of the Bay Area.

Will the clouds be enough to impact firework viewing? It's too early to tell, according to Grogan.
