The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has issued a clarion call to developers in the field of Artificial Intelligence (AI), urging them to embrace transparency in their practices. This directive aims to ensure fair and responsible deployment of AI systems to tackle various challenges encountered in the country.
NCC advocates transparency and privacy in AI
At a recent event held at the commission’s headquarters in Abuja, Dr. Aminu Maida, the Executive Vice Chairman of NCC, emphasized the importance of transparency in AI development.
He stressed the need for developers to disclose the data, algorithms, and models used in their AI systems. This transparency, according to Dr. Maida, is crucial for ensuring fairness and accountability in the deployment of AI technologies.
In his keynote address delivered on the occasion of World Consumer Rights Day, Dr. Maida underscored the significance of handling personal data responsibly. He urged AI organizations to adhere to strict privacy regulations and ensure that consumers understand how AI systems operate. Moreover, consumers should have avenues to address any issues or biases that may arise from the use of AI technologies.
Ethical AI Adoption and consumer Fairness
With the increasing adoption of fifth-generation (5G) technology in Nigeria, AI deployment has seen a notable uptick across various sectors. Dr. Maida called for the ethical adoption of AI innovation, particularly in critical sectors such as healthcare, finance, and transportation.
He emphasized the need for AI usage to align with existing laws, respect citizens’ privacy and rights, and uphold principles of transparency, accountability, and fairness.
In light of the pervasive deployment of AI, Dr. Maida highlighted the necessity of treating consumers fairly. Whether in accessing healthcare services, financial products, or transportation solutions, consumers should be assured of equitable treatment.
He emphasized that AI systems should operate within legal frameworks and without biases, ensuring that consumer rights are upheld at all times.
Promoting awareness and advocacy
World Consumer Rights Day, observed annually on March 15, serves as a platform to raise awareness about consumer rights globally. The theme for this year’s commemoration, ‘Fair and Responsible Artificial Intelligence for the Consumer,’ aligns with the NCC’s commitment to promoting transparency and accountability in AI development and deployment.
As Nigeria continues to embrace technological advancements, including AI, the NCC remains steadfast in its commitment to safeguarding consumer interests. The commission’s call for transparency in AI development reflects a proactive approach to addressing emerging challenges and ensuring that technology serves the common good.
the NCC’s directive underscores the importance of transparency, accountability, and fairness in AI development and deployment. By adhering to these principles, developers can contribute to building trust among consumers and stakeholders, thereby fostering a conducive environment for the responsible use of AI technologies in Nigeria’s socio-economic development.
With the spotlight on fair and responsible AI, stakeholders are encouraged to collaborate towards harnessing the full potential of AI while safeguarding consumer rights and promoting ethical standards in technology innovation and adoption.
