Military deserter turns himself in at Rainbow Bridge after 16 years

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) -- A man was arrested Tuesday at the Rainbow Bridge in Niagara Falls after turning himself in for military desertion 16 years after the crime was committed, the U.S. Customs and Border Protection announced.

According to officials, the 38-year-old U.S. citizen entered the bridge on the pedestrian walkway. His identity was verified after he told them about the crime. The man was found to have an active National Crime Information Center U.S. Army warrant for Military Desertion.

"Our officers work diligently to screen all travelers entering the United States," said Area Port Director Gaetano Cordone. "We work closely with several law enforcement agencies to help capture fugitives and ensure they are held accountable for their actions."

The 38-year-old was processed by CBP officers and turned over to U.S. Army personnel. His name was not released due to CBP privacy restrictions.
