Michelin-Recommended Ambrogio by Acquerello to Shutter in New Year
"It's bittersweet for us," said owner Giacomo Pizzigoni, who added that while the recognition alone wasn't enough to keep them open, it does allow them to step back and refocus on the Ambrogio15 pizzeria in Pacific Beach.
A fine-dining Italian restaurant in La Jolla that had received the rare honor of a recommendation from the prestigious Michelin Guide earlier this year, is closing its doors.
Ambrogio by Acquerello on Fay Ave. says that its last meals will be served on Tuesday, Dec. 31.
The partnership between San Diego-based Ambrogio15 Restaurant Group and the Michelin-starred Acquerello in Italy was included in the Michelin Guide California for July.
“This friendly, cozy La Jolla offshoot of a celebrated restaurant outside of Milan has a vibe somewhere between humble and sophisticated, for a comfortable experience that’s none too precious,” Michelin reviewers said at the time.
“It’s bittersweet for us,” said owner Giacomo Pizzigoni, who added that while the recognition alone wasn’t enough to keep them open, it does allow them to step back and refocus on the Ambrogio15 pizzeria in Pacific Beach.
“It was a very fun adventure, but we decided with our team that it would make sense to transition to a new project which would strengthen our position as a leader in the neighborhood of Pacific Beach.”
He said that the change will allow them to experiment with Italian cuisine, while keeping a focus on the pizzas that made them famous to begin with.
Some Ambrogio by Acquerello employees will stay on with the company, including executive chef Enea Sintoni and sous chef Filippo Giglio.
“So there will be a little bit of a Michelin touch,” said Pizzigoni.
Ambrogio by Acquerello opened in the fall of 2022.
