Artificial Intelligence (AI) is transforming how we interact with the world, from getting directions via GPS to generating content with tools like ChatGPT and Gemini.
While AI makes our lives more convenient, many people find it confusing or intimidating. Genny Sacco-Bak spoke with Sanchit Shangari, a digital and communications coordinator at the University of Winnipeg’s Professional, Applied, and Continuing Education (PACE) program, to shed light on this topic.
Sanchit’s deep understanding of AI offers valuable insights into how we can harness its power for practical purposes while also navigating its limitations.
The Growing Presence of AI
AI has been around longer than many realize, dating back to the 1950s. In recent years, its capabilities have become more integrated into everyday life, with machine learning powering tools like Netflix recommendations and Amazon’s personalized shopping suggestions.
The launch of OpenAI’s ChatGPT in November 2022 marked a turning point, bringing AI tools into public consciousness as practical tools for school, work, and even personal projects.
“AI is like a best friend that knows everything but nothing at the same time,” says Sanchit. It has access to vast amounts of data but lacks personal context—something only humans can provide.
How to Get the Most Out of AI
One of the key takeaways from my conversation with Sanchit is the importance of specificity when interacting with AI tools like ChatGPT. For instance, asking for a recipe is not enough to say, “Give me a cookie recipe.” Instead, provide details like, “I need a gluten-free chocolate chip cookie recipe for my grandkids’ birthday party, and I have cashews but no cranberries.”
AI thrives on clear instructions and context. Sanchit explains, “Think of it like painting a picture. If you say, ‘Draw a dog,’ you’ll get something generic. But if you specify, ‘Draw a golden retriever with fluffy fur,’ you’ll get something much closer to your vision.”
The Role of Prompts in AI
Prompts are the foundation of effective AI use. They guide the system by setting the tone, providing context, and outlining expectations. Sanchit suggests framing prompts like you’re speaking to a person, using polite language like “please” and “thank you.” This approach, he notes, often yields better results.
Research from 2023 suggests that starting your prompts with a polite request makes the interaction feel more human and encourages better responses.
A New Perspective on AI
Sanchit’s advice shifts the way we think about AI, encouraging us to approach it as a collaborator rather than just a tool. By tailoring prompts and providing context, we can unlock AI’s full potential, whether it’s for baking cookies, creating presentations, or solving complex problems.
As AI continues to evolve, the possibilities are endless. But as Sanchit reminds us, success lies in understanding what we want to achieve and how we communicate those goals to AI systems.
So, next time you use an AI tool, remember that specificity, politeness, and context are your best friends. You might find yourself smiling at the screen, realizing how seamlessly this technology can fit into your life.
