Massive snow totals hit high country with Eldora, Copper Mountain, Breckenridge on verge of opening

Massive snow totals in the mountains this week portend a great weekend of skiing, including three ski areas set to open for the season.

Copper Mountain, which has received 28 inches since the series of storms began on Sunday, and Breckenridge which received 14 inches over the past five days, open on Friday. Eldora, which also picked up 14 inches, opens Thursday. Sixteen ski areas have received a foot or more over the past five days including Wolf Creek with 21 inches, Echo Mountain with 17 and Winter Park with 16, according to the OpenSnow forecasting and reporting service.

This week’s openings will bring the number of ski areas in operation to six. Wolf Creek opened Oct. 22. Keystone and Arapahoe Basin opened Saturday.

Eldora’s opening is coming eight days before previously scheduled. It will open with the Alpenglow chair in operation from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on weekdays, 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on weekends. Three trails with a 1,000-foot vertical drop will be open. No beginner terrain will be available. A small terrain park will be open as well.

More snow is in store rest of the week. Wolf Creek is expected to receive 15 more inches over the next five days, according to OpenSnow. Seven other areas are predicted to receive six inches or more, including Monarch (12), Echo Mountain (11) and Eldora (10).
