Man pleads guilty, gets 8 years probation on assault against public servant charge
A man was sentenced to eight years deferred adjudication after pleading guilty to aggravated assault against a public servant in connection with an incident where he was allegedly suffering a mental health crisis.
AUSTIN (KXAN) -- A man was sentenced to eight years of deferred adjudication after he pleaded guilty to aggravated assault against a public servant following a 2023 incident in southeast Austin, according to Travis County court documents.
Christopher Vanover was charged with the first-degree felony after a SWAT situation in December 2023. The Austin Police Department previously said it responded to a call reporting Vanover had intentionally harmed himself inside of a home.
Ultimately, officers at the home used a stun gun on Vanover and then shot him during the incident, police said previously.
In Texas, deferred adjudication is a type of probation, which gives the person sentenced the opportunity to keep the conviction off their criminal record if they meet the terms of the agreement.
