(KRON) -- A man has been convicted of carjacking an Uber at Fisherman's Wharf in January, San Francisco District Attorney Brooke Jenkins announced Thursday.
The crime happened in the early morning hours of Jan 21, 2024. The Uber driver was waiting in front of a Fisherman's Wharf hotel to take a passenger to the airport when 48-year-old Jason Gresham approached him.
According to the DA's office, Gresham opened the front passenger's side door and demanded a ride from the driver. When the driver refused, Gresham showed him a "shiny, pointed object" and demanded they get out of the car or Gresham would "hit" him.
The victim got out, and Gresham climbed into the driver's seat and drove off.
Gresham headed towards the Bay Bridge as the victim called 911, per the DA's office. SFPD officers saw the vehicle and tried to stop it, but Gresham did not pull over.
California Highway Patrol's Oakland unit took over the chase and followed Gresham for 40 minutes as he reached speeds as high as 90 miles per hour. He was eventually detained in a parking lot in Vallejo and gave officers a fake name and birthday.
Gresham was charged with carjacking, evading officer and giving false information to an officer.
