Long-awaited Hello Kitty store returns to the Bay Area

(KRON) – Bay Area Hello Kitty fans have a reason to celebrate. The Japanese company Sanrio that created Hello Kitty has announced a new store returning to the Bay Area.

Friday, the grand opening of the Sanrio store will commence in the Cupertino Marketplace.

According to Sanrio, fans may receive giveaways and photo opportunities. According to Sanrio’s Instagram, the pop icon herself, Hello Kitty, is set to make an appearance on Friday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The store is packed with Hello Kitty plush, stationery, beauty and clothing collections. Sanrio also sells other beloved characters such as My Melody, Kuromi, Cinnamoroll, Pochacco, Keroppi and more.

Sanrio just celebrated five decades of Hello Kitty brand. To many people’s surprise, Hello Kitty didn’t start as a cartoon. Yuko Shimizu, a Sanrio illustrator, drew her as a decoration for stationery, tote bags, cups and other small accessories in 1974.

A decade ago, Sanrio informed fans that despite her feline features, Hello Kitty is a little girl.

The new Sanrio store is located at 19690 Stevens Creek Blvd.
