Herald readers sound off on fighting Hamas terror in Israel, foreign aid from the U.S., John Deaton, and George Orwell's "1984" reflected in today's politics
Fighting terror
The suggestion that Israel should begin a ceasefire against Hamas now that its leader, Yahya Sinwar, is dead, flies in the face of historical precedent. The Allies did not stop fighting Nazi Germany once Adolf Hitler died; they fought until Germany surrendered. The United States did not stop its war on terror when Osama Bin Laden was killed; U.S. forces in Syria and Iraq are still fighting terrorists in the Middle East to this day. By continuing its pursuit of the terrorists who slaughtered and raped 1,200 Israelis on Oct. 7, the Israeli army can ensure that such atrocities will never be repeated. That’s the goal all decent people should share.

Deaton v. Warren
You know how you can tell John Deaton isn’t a professional politician? He makes too much sense. From income inequality to tax policy to government spending to housing assistance to financial education. He nails all of these issues perfectly. Senator Warren’s response? No comment.

Foreign aid
Our foreign aid for fiscal year 2025 is around $95 billion, and a number of countries receiving this aid do not seem to appreciate the generosity of the United States.
We have many people in the U.S. who are in need of financial assistance who would be much more appreciative of the aid.
The hard-hit residents of North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and Florida who experienced the devastation from hurricanes Helene and Milton should have priority over aid to any foreign countries. These southeastern states need the humanitarian aid, including food and water; and need funding for long-term projects to rebuild infrastructure. Maybe we should use the money to provide grants and very low interest loans to devastated U.S. residents to help them rebuild their homes, businesses and lives.
The devastation and financial difficulties of people losing homes and businesses in Western wildfires, and the people experiencing hurricane damage in areas of Texas and Louisiana should also receive assistance.
Our government should cut back some foreign aid and make those funds available to states hard hit by natural disasters. An initial 10% across the board cut in foreign aid of about $10 billion would be a good start to providing some relief.

“1984”
I heard a liberal on the radio today telling people they need to read “1984” before voting this year, I don’t think he realized that in that novel, the bad guys today would be the Democratic party. Making up their own language, controlling what other people can say or do, using violence for political goals, that is the modern left in Washington D.C. today.
George Orwell was a staunch anti-Marxist, and would be appalled to see his novels coming true in America today, having only being off in his predictions by 40 years.
