Los Angeles County officials are set to vote on a motion to honor former President Jimmy Carter, who died Sunday at the age of 100.
L.A. County Board of Supervisors Chair Kathryn Barger and Supervisor Hilda Solis have introduced the motion to declare Thursday, Jan. 9 a countywide day of mourning.
President Biden previously called for a National Day of Mourning on that day; all federal offices will be closed out of respect for the longest-living president in U.S. history.
The motion introduced by Barger and Solis aligns with the federal observance and the county’s honoring of late President George H.W. Bush with a similar action in 2018.
If passed, all non-emergency and non-essential county offices, agencies and entities will close on Jan. 9, which allows for area residents and L.A. County employees to reflect on President Carter’s contributions to the nation.
All essential services – including public safety and emergency operations – will not close.
“President Jimmy Carter’s lifelong commitment to public service, human rights and global peace exemplified the highest ideals of leadership,” Chair Barger said in a press release. “It’s fitting that Los Angeles County joins the nation in paying tribute to the extraordinary legacy by observing a day of mourning.”
The board is set to vote on the motion at their upcoming meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 7.
