The Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research (KISR) has recently announced the successful completion of a groundbreaking research project titled ‘Development of a Home Energy Management System Based on Active Control.’ The project, led by engineer Farid Al-Ghumlas from the Energy and Construction Research Center, marks a significant advancement in sustainability through the utilization of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) technologies.
Innovative solutions for sustainable living
Engineer Farid Al-Ghumlas highlighted the project’s pioneering approach, which focused on leveraging AI and ML algorithms to optimize energy usage in residential settings. The primary objective was to develop innovative strategies for controlling air conditioning units, aiming to reduce energy consumption while maintaining comfortable living conditions.
The methodology employed in the project involved the construction of a model house designed to simulate typical Kuwaiti construction styles. This model served as a testing ground for implementing cutting-edge control strategies and developing modern systems for the optimal management of various household utilities, including air conditioning, lighting, and window blinds. By utilizing advanced control systems, the research aimed to achieve a minimum of 20 percent reduction in energy consumption within residential units.
Optimal control systems yield remarkable results
Through rigorous experimentation, the research team evaluated the effectiveness of three distinct machine learning models in controlling air conditioning devices within the model house. Among these models, the artificial neural network emerged as the most promising solution, demonstrating the capability to achieve energy savings of up to 26 percent—a significant advancement in pursuing sustainable energy practices.
Driving sustainable practices through technology
The successful implementation of AI and ML-based control systems represents a major milestone in the ongoing efforts to promote sustainable living and reduce carbon footprints. By harnessing the power of these technologies, homeowners can effectively manage energy consumption without compromising comfort or convenience.
The outcomes of this research project hold immense potential for widespread adoption across residential sectors, both in Kuwait and beyond. As countries worldwide prioritize sustainability initiatives, integrating AI-driven solutions for home energy management could play a pivotal role in achieving long-term environmental goals.
