Knife-wielding man shot inside federal courthouse in Harrisburg, PA
The man attacked a security guard with a knife and was shot by multiple guards, according to the U.S. Marshals Service.
A man wielding a knife was shot and wounded in a federal courthouse Monday morning in Harrisburg, Pa., authorities said.
Building security guards shot the man in the first-floor lobby of the Sylvia H. Rambo United States Courthouse after he tried to attack them with the knife, according to the U.S. Marshals Service, which contracted the guards.
The guards and the man with the knife were not publicly identified. The man was in stable condition, and the guards were not injured, U.S. Marshals said. Cops did not say what inspired the man to bring a knife to a federal courthouse.
A bullet hole could be seen in a courthouse window, and at least 30 evidence markers were on the ground inside as caution tape ringed the entrance, local Fox affiliate WPMT reported. The courthouse was closed for the rest of the day.
The FBI is leading the investigation into the shooting, along with the Department of Homeland Security.
The Sylvia Rambo courthouse just opened in 2023, replacing an older building from the 1960s that had outdated security systems and only four courtrooms, compared to eight in the new building. Daily proceedings are largely focused on the United States District Court for the Middle District of Pennsylvania. There are also administrative offices throughout the building.
