Jogger killed in hit-and-run crash identified
A jogger killed in a hit-and-run crash in Ocean Beach Thursday morning has been identified, local medical officials said.
SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) -- A jogger killed in a hit-and-run crash in Ocean Beach Thursday morning has been identified, local medical officials said.
Michael Casey Ellis, 30, was announced as the deceased, according to the San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office.
The crash occurred just before 5 a.m. at the intersection of Nimitz Boulevard and West Point Loma Boulevard.
Ellis was jogging westbound on West Point Loma Boulevard when he crossed Nimitz Boulevard and was struck by a BMW sedan traveling southbound on Nimitz Boulevard.
Witnesses say the BMW appeared to be racing with a white Ford Mustang. Both vehicles were seen traveling upwards of 60 miles per hour in a 45 miles per hour zone, according to authorities.
When first responders arrived, they found the victim and pronounced him dead at the scene.
The driver of the BMW left the location and was not found when U.S. Navy police officers discovered the unoccupied vehicle less than two hours later in the 3500 block of Canon Street near the crash site. The vehicle had significant front-end damage and a shattered windshield.
A suspect description has not been released at this time. Police are also looking to identify the driver in the white Mustang.
Traffic was impacted in the area for several hours.
