WASHINGTON, D.C. - A man listed on the U.S. Marshals most wanted list for murdering a suburban Chicago attorney was arrested this week in Mexico.

According to the U.S. Marshals Service, John Panaligan, 57, was taken into custody in Mexico on Monday for allegedly strangling attorney Jigar Patel on December 7, 2016 at his office in a suburb north of Chicago.

Reportedly, Patel was representing plaintiffs suing Panaligan in civil court. Police said Panaligan allegedly lured Patel to his office by scheduling an appointment using an alias. Authorities believe Panaligan was wearing a disguise at the time of the appointment.

Surveillance video captured Panaligan allegeldy wearing the disguise and killing Patel in his office.

Two days after the murder, Panaligan allegedly smuggled a firearm into Canada and was detained by Canadian border patrol, who allowed his return to the U.S.

Panaligan was then interviewed by Northbrook Police in relation to the attorney's death. While under investigation, authorities executed search warrants throughout Panaligan's home and belongings. According to U.S. Marshals, Panaligan fled to Mexico during the search, and a warrant was issued for his arrest for first-degree murder.

Panaligan was placed on the U.S. Marshals 15 Most Wanted list in November 2020. He was arrested on Monday by Mexican law enforcement in Tepic, Mexico.
