I-70 westbound closed: 'Best option is to stay in Denver'

DENVER (KDVR) — Heavy mountain snow made for challenging road conditions in Colorado's Rocky Mountain passes on Christmas day, resulting in a closure of Interstate 70 near Georgetown.

According to the Colorado State Patrol in Golden, the roadway was closed as crews worked to clear multiple spin-outs, slide-offs and crashes. The road was closed westbound at Georgetown but reopened eastbound at the Eisenhower Tunnel after a crash was cleared from the roadway. CSP warned motorists that the roadway remained slushy, and asked for slow speeds.

As of 4 p.m., the passenger vehicle traction law and commercial vehicle chain laws were in full effect. CSP told motorists to expect traffic holds at the Eisenhower Johnson Memorial Tunnel while the Colorado Department of Transportation cleared I-70 from Georgetown to the Eisenhower Tunnel.

The roadway heading west was closed at Georgetown, which is near milepost 228 on I-70.

"Best option is to stay in Denver," the CSP troop stated on X. "Clear Creek County has very limited lodging and parking."

This is a developing story. As more information is gathered, it will be updated.
