ST. LOUIS - Hunters can donate part or even their entire deer harvest to those in need of fresh protein through Operation Food Search and the Missouri Department of Conservation.
The "Share the Harvest" program is a partnership between MDC and the Conservation Federation of Missouri alongside Operation Food Search to bring the deer meat to those in need of fresh protein in the St. Louis area.
According to Operation Food Search, proteins such as venison are the most popular items and most in demand.
Hunters are asked to bring their deer to an approved meat processor to process the venison into typically ground meat, then packaged for distribution.
Typically, meat processors charge hunters around $100 to process a deer into ready-to-cook meat, but CFM will cover $75 for hunters donating whole deer statewide, and OFS will contribute $30 per deer.
MDC said St. Louis, St. Charles and Jefferson counties agreed to limit their deer processing fees so there is little no charge for donating hunters.
