(KRON) -- Homeowners in Walnut Creek can be eligible for a rebate of up to $15,000 if they install an Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) on their property.
An ADU is an independent living space that can be added to a home. It can be in spaces such as a garage or basement. The City of Walnut Creek is offering the reward to help ease the housing crisis.
“The City is continuing to look for innovative ways to ease the housing shortage,” said Mayor Cindy Darling. “We believe this can be a key motivator to encourage those who have been considering that step.”
Each person, residential lot, or entity is allowed just one rebate. In total, more than $129,000 will be available to be handed out to residents.
ADU units must be 1,000 square feet or smaller. The program is open now, and it will end in August 2026.
Residents of low-income households can receive between $5,000 and $15,000 depending on the size of their ADU. Other residents can receive between $2,500 and $7,500.
Anyone who wants to earn the rebate can visit the City of Walnut Creek's website or email ADUprogram@walnut-creek.org.
