A homeless man was found dead of a suspected overdose Friday sitting on a bench next to his shopping cart along a popular East River walkway in Upper Manhattan, police said.
A jogger spotted the unidentified man unconscious at a makeshift encampment on Bobby Wagner Walk near E. 112th St. in East Harlem and called 911 around 3:30 p.m., said police.
Medics pronounced the victim dead at the scene, they said.
The man’s body remained in a sitting position on a park bench for hours after police arrived. He had covered himself in a white sheet and was hunched over a shopping cart that contained a bag filled with bottles and cans.
A police source told the Daily News that investigators suspect he died of a drug overdose.
The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will issue an official cause of death following an autopsy.
Bobby Wagner Walk forms the portion of the East River Esplanade that extends from E. 90th St. to E. 125th St.
