Health officials issue warning after bat in Oceanside tests positive for rabies
Health officials are warning the public after a bat found in an Oceanside parking lot tested positive for rabies, according to a news release by San Diego County on Monday.
OCEANSIDE, Calif. (FOX 5/KUSI) -- Health officials are warning the public after a bat found in an Oceanside parking lot tested positive for rabies, according to a news release by San Diego County on Monday.
The county said the bat was found on the ground in the Petco parking lot located at 2130 Vista Way around 9 a.m. last Wednesday.
If anyone was in the parking lot at that time and had direct contact with the bat, they are urged to contact County Public Health Services at 619-692-8499.
Health officials warn that without prompt treatment, rabies in humans can be fatal.
Rabies can be transmitted through a bat bite or if a bat's saliva enters a human through a cut or abrasion, or mucous membranes like the eyes, nose or mouth, the county said in its release.
Health officials said if a person directly comes into contact with a bat, they should wash the affected area with soap and water and seek medical advice right away.
So far this year, there have been 10 rabid bats detected throughout San Diego.
