Healey nominates 3 to Massachusetts Superior Court

Gov. Maura Healey has nominated three candidates to the Massachusetts Superior Court system.

Healey said she’s “pleased to nominate these three highly qualified attorneys to help uphold the law, protect freedoms and maintain fairness on the Superior Court.”

If the governor’s nominations are confirmed, Sarah Kim, Ira Gant and Adam Hornstine will join the ranks of the 82 justices sitting in 20 courthouses across Massachusetts. Superior courts handle murder cases, civil actions claiming more than $50,000, and other criminal and civil matters.

Kim is both the deputy treasurer and the general counsel for the state Office of the Treasurer and Receiver General after previously serving in the Massachusetts public sector as the interim chair of the Cannabis Control Commission and before that as an assistant attorney general in the fraud and financial crimes commission. In her early career was an attorney in the litigation department of the Boston firm Bingham McCutchen LLP.

Gant is a longtime public defender and is currently the forensic services director for the Committee for Public Counsel Services. This position, according to Healey’s office, “oversees forensic litigation support and training” for CPCS cases. He additionally sits on the state Forensic Science Oversight Board and Commission on Medicolegal Investigation.

Hornstine is the deputy legal counsel in Healey’s office. This position entails supervising the legal departments of cabinet branches, reviewing executive orders, legislation, regulations and emergency declarations. He previously worked for Massachusetts U.S. District Court Judge Patti B. Saris, worked in litigation at WilmerHale, served as a special assistant district attorney at the Middlesex DA’s office and as an assistant attorney general for Massachusetts.
