Gang member charged with shooting Cicero police officer during traffic stop
A 19-year-old man is facing charges after he allegedly shot a Cicero police officer Saturday.Giovanni Saldivar is charged with two counts of attempted murder of a police officer, aggravated battery with a firearm and aggravated discharge of a firearm, Cicero police said.The incident unfolded about 12:45 a.m. as the officer and his partner saw a vehicle that was double-parked at 35th Street and 61st Court, police said.The officers pulled up to the vehicle and told the driver to move, police said. As the officers began to drive away Saldivar allegedly opened fire, striking one of the officers in the back..The officer — a 29-year-old who has been with the Cicero Police Department for five years — was taken to Loyola University Medical Center in serious condition. The officer was discharged from the hospital Sunday, police said Monday.Saldivar fled into a nearby bar but was taken into custody without incident, police said.Police said Saldivar is a "known" gang member. He was ordered held pending trial during his initial court appearance Monday.
