A funeral and law enforcement walkthrough honoring Endicott College Police Sgt. Jeremy Cole, who was killed in a wrong-way crash the night before Thanksgiving, will be held on Monday.
“To the approximately 1,000 people who attended a vigil for Sgt. Cole … to the thousands who have offered condolences and thoughts online and in person, thank you,” said Endicott College Police Chief Kerry Ramsdell in an announcement Thursday. “Your thoughts and support have meant the world to our department over these past few days. I encourage everyone who knew Sgt. Cole to continue sharing stories about him.”
On Monday, a law enforcement walk-through will begin the services at 1:30 p.m. at Campbell Funeral Home in Beverly. A public wake will follow from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
Cole, 49, of Exeter, New Hampshire, was killed in a crash on Interstate 95 in Beverly coming home from a work shift late the night before Thanksgiving. A Tesla going the wrong way on the interstate crashed into Cole’s truck head-on.
The police sergeant was pronounced dead on the scene.
Members of law enforcement are asked to arrive at the funeral home by noon, the release said, and park at the Living Hope Church of the Nazarene and Saint John’s Church nearby. Proper dress for law enforcement is winter departmental uniform, white gloves and badge shrouds, along with rain coats.
A 40-year-old New Bedford man was charged with motor vehicle homicide while operating under the influence of liquor and operating recklessly and manslaughter, among other charges, for the wrong-way crash on Tuesday.
The Endicott College Police Department release offered thanks to the Massachusetts State Police, Beverly Police Department, Beverly Fire Department, Essex County Sheriff’s Department, Salem Police Department and other local law enforcement agencies for “their assistance during this difficult time” and help with service planning.
The walkthrough will have a designated area on the sidewalk across the street near the funeral home for members of the media, who are asked to refrain from filming the Cole family.
“(Sgt. Cole) was a wonderful man, loving father, proud family man and a protector of our campus,” Ramsdell said. “We miss him dearly.”
