WATERVLIET, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- A community fundraiser is being held on Saturday for a local pediatric ICU nurse who is battling a rare blood disorder: severe aplastic anemia. Tia Szczepanski was just diagnosed in March and needs a bone marrow transplant.

The "Tia Strong" fundraiser is planned from 2 p.m. to 10 p.m. in Watervliet at Patrick's Pub. It will include a bone marrow registry to help find a match for Tia. Anyone between the ages of 18 and 40 can get swabbed.
There will be a $20 cover charge to help with medical expenses as neither Tia nor her husband of just a few months, a Watervliet police officer, are working right now. Live music and a DJ are planned throughout the afternoon and evening as well as raffles and gift baskets.
Blood donations are also encouraged as that will help Tia until a bone marrow match is found.
