DENVER (KDVR) — A female victim is safe thanks to the Fort Collins Police Services' Special Weapons and Tactics team after she was held hostage and seriously injured by a man on Nov. 29.
Officers responded to the 700 block of Bear Creek Drive on Friday at about 6:40 p.m. after a man called police and reported he had a hostage. While he was on the phone, dispatchers could hear a female asking for help in the background. The area is heavily residential and a few blocks from Troutman Park.
Police said the man claimed he was armed and threatened to kill the hostage.
A reverse911 was made for the surrounding area to make residents aware of the situation.
SWAT negotiators tried to resolve the situation peacefully but at a certain point entered the residence and by 8:15 p.m. Erik Dunning was in custody.
Police said the victim, who was known to Dunning, received immediate medical care for serious injuries Dunning inflicted on her. The agency did not provide an update on her injuries as of Monday.
“We want Fort Collins residents to know that hostage situations in this city are extremely rare," said Lieutenant Sara Lynd, of the Fort Collins Police Crimes Against Persons Unit, in a release. "It is the high level of training and professionalism of Fort Collins Police Officers that resulted in the safe rescuing of this hostage and taking this suspect into custody. Our Detectives will now work with the District Attorney’s Office in the prosecution of this incident.”
Dunning was booked into the Larimer County Jail, where he is facing charges of first-degree assault, second-degree kidnapping, false imprisonment, failure or refusal to leave premise - hostage, obstructing a police officer and resisting arrest.
