EAST ST. LOUIS, Ill. -- Former East St. Louis City Manager Carlos Mayfield is wanted by authorities after being charged with misusing city funds and fraudulently using a credit or debit card, according to an Illinois State Police announcement Wednesday.
Investigators allege that Mayfield, 60, illegally appropriated between $500 and $10,000 in city resources. The investigation began on April 3, 2024, when ISP received an initial allegation of theft and official misconduct. Special agents found evidence that Mayfield had knowingly used City of East St. Louis funds for personal gain.
On October 1, 2024, prosecutors issued an arrest warrant charging Mayfield with two felonies: theft of government property and fraudulent credit/debit card use. Despite weekly communications with Mayfield's attorney, the city manager has not surrendered to authorities and is now considered uncooperative.
Law enforcement officials say they will arrest Mayfield when he is located.
