Forecast: Heavy rain, flash floods, and severe weather risks
Heavy rainfall and severe thunderstorms are expected to cause flash flooding and damaging wind gusts in the St. Louis area, with rainfall totals ranging from 1-4 inches.
ST. LOUIS -- Rainfall totals are ranging from 1-3 inches near St. Louis with amounts of over four inches reported south of Sty. Louis where flash flood warnings are in effect in Jefferson, Washington, St. Francois, Ste. Genevieve, Iron, and Reynolds Counties.
Rain and storms will expand significantly late this afternoon into tonight as strong to severe storms develop and spread slowly east. In addition to heavy rain and flash flooding, these storms will bring the risk of damaging wind gusts of 50-60 mph and a couple of small tornadoes. The risk for severe weather will be greatest in counties west of the St. Louis area. However, they may still be near severe limits as they cross the region late this evening.
Rainfall and non-severe thunderstorms will linger through at least the first half of Tuesday. Additional rainfall through the event of 2-4 inches is expected on top of the 1-3 we have seen already.
