A Ferguson police officer critically injured on the job back in August is being moved Tuesday morning for the next chapter in his recovery. Supporters are welcome to help pay tribute to Officer Travis Brown as part of his send-off.
Officer Travis "TJ" Brown has been hospitalized at SLU Hospital since his tragic injury happened back in August. On Tuesday morning, Brown will be released from the hospital and flown to a facility in Atlanta to continue his recovery process.
The 36-year-old Brown was hurt during a demonstration marking the 10-year anniversary of the Michael Brown shooting. Officer Brown was trying to stop a protester when the protestor knocked him to the ground outside of the Ferguson Police Department.
Brown hit his head and has been hospitalized ever since suffering from a traumatic brain injury. The protestor, Elijah Gantt, was arrested and is facing charges in this case.
Officer Brown has spent extensive time in the ICU and has undergone multiple surgeries. Brown is said to be making progress as Brown's family says he's been able to open his eyes, move his fingers, and wiggle his toes.
Brown's sister, Ramona Gordon, says that progress is giving the family hope. Now, they're praying that the move to the facility in Atlanta will help Officer Brown as well. "We've all had some dark moments just because he's our loved one," Gordon said. "It was very dark for us at a moment. We didn't know how or where we would end up. So the fact that we are here and it's three months later and he's showing some miraculous improvements."
Supporters are invited to be part of Officer Brown's big sendoff Tuesday morning, beginning at 11:30 a.m. There will be a police escort from SLU Hospital to the Spirit of St. Louis Airport in Chesterfield.
The escort will leave from the hospital, head down Grand Boulevard, then go west on I-64 to Spirit Airport in Chesterfield.
Supporters are welcome to join them on that route to offer support and prayers to Officer Brown as he continues with his recovery.
