Family of Pinole mother killed raises awareness on domestic violence

PINOLE, Calif. (KRON) -- It’s been one year since the killing of a Pinole mother right in front of her little boy. The family is hoping that her senseless death serves as a warning to others about the dangers of domestic violence.

Brittany Ligdis is remembered by her family as a loving mother. At just 30 years old, and months before her college graduation, the Pinole Police Department said her ex, Jeffrey Kendall, broke into her home and shot Brittany in the head with an assault weapon.

Their little boy, Laim, was just 4 years old at the time he witnessed his mother being killed, according to the family.

Brittany’s mother, Cathy, is now speaking out for the first time to share her family’s painful story. Cathy wishes to keep Brittany’s memory alive, as well as warn others about the dangers of domestic violence.

“Think of us, all the things we miss about her, you know, her kiss, her hug,” Cathy said. “I’ll miss everything, myself. I will love her forever, and I love you, Brittany.”

More than half of women killed by gun violence are killed by family members or their partners, according to the National Domestic Violence Hotline. If you or someone you know needs help, call the 24/7 hotline at 800-799-7233.

Kendall, police said, was caught on camera fleeing the crime scene. Following a manhunt, Kendall was found and arrested in Santa Cruz. He is due back in court on Friday to face a charge of homicide.
