EUREKA, Mo. - Eureka firefighters held an important training Monday on how to save family pets.

Specialized pet oxygen masks are now on all Eureka fire trucks and ambulances. The goal is to protect the pet if they are rescued from a house fire.

One family all escaped their home safely when flames broke out on Nov. 22, all thanks to their dog. Their pet alerted the family, allowing all family members and three out of four cats to get out.

The pet masks are designed for a tighter fit for animals to get oxygen to any size animal. From dogs, cats, ferrets, birds, or even a mouse, trainers demonstrated to firefighters how to use them.

Kennelwood also taught pet first aid and CPR, such as where to find a dog's pulse.

Training will continue over the next few days. To request training for yourself or your local first responders, click here.
