(KRON) -- On Friday, Elon Musk blasted a segment of the MAGA movement as "contemptible fools" and called for them to be ousted from the Republican Party. The tweet from the Tesla CEO and owner of X, formerly Twitter, was the latest salvo in what some are calling a "civil war" among the far right.
The trouble began on Thursday when failed Republican presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy posted an X diatribe blasting American culture that "has venerated mediocrity over excellence for way too long." The tech billionaire, who along with Musk has been put in charge of DOGE, a Trump Administration initiative to slash government spending, bizarrely placed part of the blame on 90s sitcoms.
Ramaswamy argued that this cultural deficit was a key reason "top tech companies often hire foreign-born & first-generation engineers over 'native' Americans." The post ignited something of a firestorm on the far right with conservative commentators.
Laura Loomer, who has a documented history of making racist comments, launched a series of tweets blasting "Big Tech," and criticizing President-elect Trump's appointment of Indian-American Sriram Krishnan as AI policy advisor.
Loomer also accused Musk, who has defended Ramaswamy's position on H-1B visas for tech workers, of censoring her on X.
On Friday, Scott Adams, the conservative creator of the "Dilbert" comic strip tweeted that "MAGA is taking a page from Democrats on how to lose elections while feeling good about themselves."
"Yes," Musk replied. "And those contemptible fools must be removed from the Republican Party root and stem."
The whole tweet-storm seems to have ignited a rift between a segment of MAGA's traditional anti-immigrant, largely white base, and the growing Silicon Valley tech element of support for Trump.
"Don't worry guys," read one of Loomer's tweets. "The divorce is coming soon."
