ST. LOUIS - The Saint Louis Zoo is preparing to welcome a new baby elephant within the next few months.
17-year-old Jada, an Asian elephant, is due to have her first baby at the end of this year or beginning of 2025, the zoo announced Thursday.
Crews have been caring for Jada over the course of several months with exercise and nutrients during the pregnancy. While they don't know if the baby is a girl or boy, they've been able to see the elephant move around in Jada's stomach.
According to the Saint Louis Zoo, elephant pregnancies last nearly two years, with the baby weighing 250 to 350 pounds on average.
The zoo says Jada is doing well.
