SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) -- A 17-year-old male riding an e-bike was seriously injured Saturday after colliding with a vehicle in Bay Park, authorities said.
According to the San Diego Police Department, the teen, who was not wearing a helmet, was riding an off-road Surron northbound in the 2600 block of Fairfield Street around 5:10 p.m. At that same time, a 41-year-old man was driving a 2001 Mercedes E320 southbound in the 2700 block of Fairfield Street.
Police said the Mercedes and the e-bike approached the intersection of Fairfield Street and Huxley Street going in opposite directions. The Mercedes then made a left turn onto eastbound Huxley Street and was involved in a collision with the e-bike.
The teen was ejected from the e-bike during the crash. The 17-year-old sustained a cerebral air embolism. According to the National Institute of Health, this occurs when gas bubbles enter the arterial or venous system of the brain, potentially obstructing blood flow and resulting in brain injury. The rider also sustained multiple facial fractures. He was transported to a local hospital for treatment. His current condition is unknown.
Traffic Division officers responded to the scene and will be handling the investigation. Authorities said alcohol was not a factor in the collision and fault is yet to be determined.
