MARION, Ill. – A rural Illinois man is in custody for a fatal hit-and-run in Williamson County late last month.
According to a post on the Williamson County Sheriff’s Office’s Facebook page, the hit-and-run happened just after 5 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 27, on North Skyline and Aisin drives in Marion, Illinois.
Deputies found the victim, Jose A. Bautista Jr., had been struck by a pickup truck while riding a scooter. Bautista was airlifted to a regional trauma center in St. Louis but succumbed to his injuries on Dec. 3. He was 44.
Investigators obtained photographic evidence before and after the incident of the truck believed to be involved. The truck had visible damage in the “after” photos.
On Nov. 28, deputies, with the help of a good Samaritan, located the truck parked outside a convenience store in Marion. Deputies arrested Guillermo Lopez, 62, the driver.
Investigators said Lopez admitted during an interview that he was aware he’d been involved in an accident.
The Williamson County State’s Attorney’s Office charged Lopez with failure to give information and render aid, leaving the scene of a crash, operating an uninsured motor vehicle, and failure to reduce speed. Lopez is scheduled to appear in court on the morning of Wednesday, Dec. 18.
