Dover Plains man arrested in New Year's Day standoff

DOVER, N.Y. (NEWS10)-- A Dover Plains man was arrested after a threat complaint and subsequent standoff on Wednesday. Richard Danko, 36, faces multiple charges.

According to the Dutchess County Sheriff's Office, deputies responded to a report of someone having been threatened with a shotgun, around 6:10 a.m., near 16 Old State Route 22. Upon arrival, deputies identified Danko as the possible suspect, but he reportedly refused to cooperate and fled into a home.

After five hours of attempting to get Danko to cooperate and unsuccessful negotiations, members of the Sheriff's Office's Emergency Services Unit entered the home and took him into custody, without further incident or injury to anyone involved. Around 11 a.m. on Wednesday, the Sheriff's Office said there was no threat to public safety as the situation was contained.

Before the standoff, Deputies said Danko was wanted on an arrest warrant for reckless endangerment from a previous incident.

Charges:

• Criminal possession of a weapon in the third degree
• Criminal contempt in the second degree
• Menacing in the second degree
• Resisting arrest
• Bail jumping

On Wednesday, he was arraigned on the warrant and the bail-jumping charge and remanded to the Dutchess County Justice and Transition Center in lieu of $10,000 cash bail. The other charges were added after the arraignment, deputies said.

According to deputies, multiple sheriff's office personnel and units responded to the scene including K-9, drones, emergency services and crisis negotiators. The Sheriff’s Office was also assisted by the New York State Police, Dutchess County Department of Emergency Response and the J.H. Ketcham Hose Company.
