Dog killed, two people displaced after Aurora fire suspected as arson

A man was arrested Monday on suspicion of arson after an overnight fire in an Aurora apartment complex killed a dog and left two people without a home.

Paul Daniel Clark was arrested on investigation of first-degree arson, fourth-degree arson for endangering life and fourth-degree arson of a residence causing $100,000 to $1 million in damages in connection to the Monday morning fire, Aurora Fire Rescue officials said.

The fire happened around 12:30 a.m. Monday in Aurora’s Abrigo Apartments, near the intersection of Peoria Street and East 30th Avenue, according to a news release from Aurora Fire Rescue.

Fire officials said flames and black smoke pouring off the building were visible for miles early Monday morning as crews — including seven fire engines, four ladder trucks, five ambulances and three battalion chiefs — fought the flames.

A dog in the apartment unit where the fire started died and the resident of that apartment was arrested on investigation of arson, fire officials said in the release.

The man, identified by fire officials as Clark, has not yet been charged in Colorado court.

Clark evacuated the apartment building before fire crews arrived and was taken to the hospital with minor injuries, fire officials said. Investigators later said they believe Clark intentionally set the fire inside his apartment.

Clark was released from the hospital Monday morning and arrested, fire officials said.

Two people living in the apartment below the unit where the fire started were displaced as a result of water damage from the fire, according to Aurora Fire Rescue. No other units were damaged.
