Dim Sum Garden is expanding to a larger space in Chinatown

A popular Chinatown dim sum spot is entering the new year with a new space, but the same beloved soup dumplings. 

Dim Sum Garden, which has been in the 1020 Race Street storefront since opening in 2013, will relocate — about 12 feet and two storefronts over — into a larger, two-floor space at 1024 Race Street, some time in December. 

Second-generation owner Sally Song says the move was precipitated by the lease ending, and the Dim Sum Garden team, including mom/founder/head chef Shizhou Da, are excited. 

“There will be a full bar, karaoke room, and party space,” she said of the new digs. “We won’t change the menu a lot. We plan to keep popular items and add some new ones.” 

Some other differences between the spaces are that while the current storefront has glass-fronted windows and a long, narrow dining area with dark tiles, the new restaurant has a large front window with a wide, bright interior of light-colored tiles and walls, dark wood furniture, a sleek black bar counter, deep interior, and two floors. 

What will become of the current space is unknown, but Chinatown has a low vacancy rate and this stretch of Race Street is prime real estate in the heart of the historic neighborhood, so it may not be empty for long.
