A Massachusetts correction officer was arrested for allegedly smuggling drugs into the MCI-Shirley prison over the weekend, the Department of Correction announced Sunday.
Correction Officer Roxsandra Wright was arrested on Saturday, the DOC said, after an investigation uncovered evidence the officer allegedly brought synthetic cannabinoid-laced paper into MCI-Shirley.
“The Massachusetts Department of Correction holds all staff members to the highest standards of professionalism and integrity,” DOC Interim Commissioner Shawn Jenkins said. “Any behavior that compromises the safety and security of our facilities, or undermines public trust, will not be tolerated.”
An ongoing investigation into the smuggling of illegal narcotics into DOC facilities, conducted jointly by the Massachusetts State Police Joint Narcotics Task Force and DOC, found Wright allegedly delivered drugs to a prisoner in MCI-Shirley.
Wright was arrested on a felony warrant issued by Ayer District Court and charged. DOC did not specify charges Sunday, directing inquiries to the Middlesex DA.
The department stated that Wright resigned weeks ahead of the charges, which took effect Oct. 31.
To deter and intercept illicit substances, DOC said staff use screening technology, operational protocols, and collaboration with law enforcement partners. The department noted they “continually adapts” protocols as new threats emerge.
“The DOC remains dedicated to creating a secure, supportive environment for all who live and work within its facilities,” the department stated. “Recognizing the risks that contraband poses to the safety and health of both staff and incarcerated individuals, the DOC has implemented a comprehensive, multi-layered approach to prevent the introduction of illicit substances.”
Jenkins thanked the State Police for their “invaluable coordination and collaboration on this matter” on Sunday.
DOC said the investigation into this matter is ongoing and the department will provide updates “as appropriate.”
Wright is expected to be arraigned in Ayer District Court on Monday.
