Commanders mum on starting QB; Jayden Daniels has '48 hours to see how I feel'

Jayden Daniels practiced on Friday but the Commanders still aren’t ready to say whether he’ll face the Bears on Sunday afternoon.Neither is the rookie quarterback.“I got 48 hours to see how I feel, and we’ll just go from there,” he told Commanders reporters Friday.Daniels hurt his ribs in last week’s win against the Panthers. He did not practice Wednesday or Thursday but made an appearance Friday. “We’re really following that process and we’ll let our eyes decide how he responds over the next 48 hours,” coach Dan Quinn told reporters. “That’ll guide us and we’ll make the best decision for him and the team.”Quinn said the team would label his participation as limited when they file their injury report later Friday. That would put him in line to be questionable for the game.“It’s not my decision. …” Daniels told reporters. “Ultimately the trainers and [general manager] Adam [Peters] and [Quinn], they make the decision. …“It feels better but I still got some time, I still got some marks I need to hit where they feel comfortable putting me out there.”If Daniels can’t go, the Commanders will start veteran Marcus Mariota. It would scuttle a matchup between the first two picks of this year’s draft — Daniels and Bears quarterback Caleb Williams, who was the No. 1 choice in April. Williams won the Heisman Trophy with USC in 2022, and Daniels did it as LSU’s quarterback last year.Williams said earlier this week that he hoped Daniels would play. Daniels said he wasn’t making too much out of the matchup this week.“Respect to Caleb and everybody,” he said, “but I look forward to playing every game.”

Commanders mum on starting QB; Jayden Daniels has '48 hours to see how I feel'

Jayden Daniels practiced on Friday but the Commanders still aren’t ready to say whether he’ll face the Bears on Sunday afternoon.

Neither is the rookie quarterback.

“I got 48 hours to see how I feel, and we’ll just go from there,” he told Commanders reporters Friday.

Daniels hurt his ribs in last week’s win against the Panthers. He did not practice Wednesday or Thursday but made an appearance Friday.

“We’re really following that process and we’ll let our eyes decide how he responds over the next 48 hours,” coach Dan Quinn told reporters. “That’ll guide us and we’ll make the best decision for him and the team.”

Quinn said the team would label his participation as limited when they file their injury report later Friday. That would put him in line to be questionable for the game.

“It’s not my decision. …” Daniels told reporters. “Ultimately the trainers and [general manager] Adam [Peters] and [Quinn], they make the decision. …

“It feels better but I still got some time, I still got some marks I need to hit where they feel comfortable putting me out there.”

If Daniels can’t go, the Commanders will start veteran Marcus Mariota. It would scuttle a matchup between the first two picks of this year’s draft — Daniels and Bears quarterback Caleb Williams, who was the No. 1 choice in April. Williams won the Heisman Trophy with USC in 2022, and Daniels did it as LSU’s quarterback last year.

Williams said earlier this week that he hoped Daniels would play. Daniels said he wasn’t making too much out of the matchup this week.

“Respect to Caleb and everybody,” he said, “but I look forward to playing every game.”
