The Colorado School of Mines Women's Rugby team is looking to bring some gold back to Golden and are battling in Houston where they will compete in the final of the Division III National Championship.
DENVER (KDVR) — The Colorado School of Mines Women's Rugby team is looking to bring some gold back to Golden and are battling in Houston where they will compete in the final of the Division III National Championship.
The team began their tournament journey in November when they took on Northern Michigan in the round of 16. After beating Northern Michigan 55-0, the team would face North Dakota in the quarterfinals where they won 62-0.
After that quarterfinal win on Nov. 17, the women's team would have to wait nearly a month before they were back in competitive action in the tournament.
They traveled to Houston alongside the three other semifinalists looking to stake their claim as the best Division III rugby team.
Mines faced off against Wisconsin-Platteville on their side of the bracket and emerged as victors, winning 32-10. On the opposite side of the bracket, the number-one-ranked Endicott took on East Stroudsburg and won the content 91-24.
The two finalists will play on Sunday for the national title starting at 10 a.m. in the SaberCats Stadium in Houston.
Both schools utilize air-tight defense, with Mines only allowing 32 points throughout the tournament so far and Endicott only allowing 24 points.
On the opposite side of the ball, both teams are equally as formidable. Endicott has the advantage in scoring by tallying 228 points across three games. Mines has put up a total of 149 points through the same amount of games.
One more game to go and the Mines Women's Rugby team has the opportunity to have its name etched in national history. Two elite competitors will go head-to-head and will surely provide a heated and energetic final.
